Title: So how did he get the scars?

I've seen The Dark knight 3 times but still can't figure out how the Joker came to be how he was. He changed his story each time about how he got the scars on his face so was he lying about all of them or was one of them true??
Or do we just never find out how exactly the Joker came to be?
In the OLD batman movie the Joker was made through some factory plant when he fell into this stuff.

originally he fell in a vad of something
that made his face deformed into a smile and turned it white.
Now he has scares. His face doesn't have the white either.
Doubt he ever had a wife though.

like batman said when joker asked if you knew how he caught the scars batman replies "don't care but i know how you got these" and shots something at joker

I know how he got the scars in the end of the movie, but i meant the ones he had the entire movie on his face, i guess we will never find out how exactly he got them . . .

How he got the scars (my guess) probably self caused.
