Title: Pan's Labyrinth in Blu-ray

I just got done inaugurating the Blu-ray drive I installed in my computer this evening by watching the Blu-ray edition of Pan's Labyrinth, and let me just say: Wow! I did a head to head between the regular DVD and this Blu-ray edition, and it's just something else. Also, the picture-in-picture video commentary looks to be different from that on the regular release, so I'll probably watch that in the next couple of days and post anything of particular note. Anyone else have this version of the film? How about the HD-DVD edition? My understanding is that the latter has some features specific to it, but I'm not exactly clear on what those are. Since I intend to get that version as well, I'd appreciate any enlightenment on the matter. Anyway, the Blu-ray is good stuff and if any of you have the equipment, I'd recommend it.

wow that sounds really good! I'm hoping to get a Blu-ray laptop when I can spare the money, so I guess I've got a good first film to watch on it!

anyway, tell us what you think about the blu-ray and HD versions, I'm really interested!

I'm taking a brief intermission from watching the video director's commentary on the BR edition, and I just thought I'd give you guys the low-down. Basically the commentary is much the same, but there are new bits from Guillermo in picture-in-picture video as well as similar clips illustrating parts of the original commentary. So far some interesting bits of new material, and I have about half of the film left to go. I intend to get the HD-DVD edition shortly, since New Line won't be making any more, having dropped the HD-DVD format.

BTW, Mbuckingham, Blu-ray capable drives are substantially cheaper for desktops than notebooks, so if portability isn't a primary concern, I would recommend getting the Blu-ray drive in a desktop. Also, you'd need a good 17" notebook for it to display the Blu-ray to full effect, and that larger screen would make it substantially more expensive and more cumbersome to carry around.

dsprag, could you point me in a good direction of where to get a blue ray drive for a desktop?? Thanks ^_^

Well, the drive I got is an LG GGC-H20L. So far I'm very pleased, especially nice is that it plays both Blu-ray and HD-DVD. So, even though the HD-DVD format is defunct, if you have a particular disc that happens to be in that format (say the HD-DVD edition of Pan's Labyrinth) you can still play it. Before you go rushing to track one down, either post or send me by private message your system specs so that you don't end up with a drive you can't use.

ok cool thanks!, does this particular type of Blu-ray drive also play normal DVD's as well??

dsprag - July 18, 2008 06:59 AM (GMT)
It does, it also burns DVDs and CDs; basically everything short of burning Blu-ray discs.

O right, thanks Dan, I'll look into that, it might be a better solution!
